$3.99 Pita Pit Pitas
$4.99 Large 1 Topping Pizzas from Papa John'sIf you read my review about empanadas, then you know I’m a fan of meat, sauce, more meat and more sauce, all stuffed into a handy package of baked dough. What’s not to like?
Known for their calzones, D.P. Dough serves up a bunch of different flavors and options. I tried the Twilight Zone and the Construction Zone. The Twilight Zone (no relation to any vampires or werewolves…hopefully) has mozzarella, sausage and ‘secret spices.’ Your guess is as good as mine, but the spice combo works even if we don’t know what’s exactly in there.
For my custom Construction Zone, I added a three-cheese mix, meatballs, egg, black olives and spinach. This one was a lighter alternative to the Twilight Zone and I liked that you could add vegetables as well. My calzones came with marinara and Italian dipping sauces, which was essential for adding more flavor.
Moderately priced at around $6 (I got mine for $4.99 each with the EatCU deal), DP Dough’s calzones are a great alternative to pizza. They make each ‘zone with fat free dough and they offer salads, wings and chicken tenders as well. If you’re in the mood for something like pizza but none of your friends are hungry, one calzone is more than enough to get you full and satisfied.
